CSC’s Australia Day 100 x 100's

Its UnAustralian not to start Australia Day with a 10k swim (shorter options are available), so come along at 6.00 am for a 6.30 am start on Thursday 26th January.
$20 per swimmer gets you pool entry and Aussie BBQ breakfast. Special prizes for: best on field, crowd favourite, most Australian, most UnAustralian and others.
Send us an email if you're coming so we know how many to cater for and bring your $20 on the day.
The only thing more Australian than a 10 km swim (shorter options are available) is cooking an Aussie BBQ breakfast, so let us know if you want some quality time behind the BBQ and we will make some space available for you.

Swimming season wrap-up

The swimming season wrapped up on Saturday with the completion of the Australian Age Championships. This year Commercial had a good representation at nationals.
We started in March with the Open Water nationals in Penrith. The Club was represented by Kurt Hogan in the Boys 12/13 years 5 km swim. Kurt produced a tremendous swim to finish in 6th place in a time of 1:06:38.00.
Last week the Club was represented at the Australian Age Championships in Adelaide by 7 swimmers — Charlotte Casey, Rob Eugster, Morgan Farley, Brooke Krause, Lachlan Neill, Campbell Carsley and Sam Young — and 2 Technical Officials — Therese Goddard and Steve Carsley.
The team completed 26 swims, with 16 PBs and 3 finalists. For Charlotte, Morgan and Sam this was their first nationals and I know they enjoyed the experience. Everyone performed very well and represented the Club with distinction. The full results for age nationals are listed below. In the club points score, Commercial finished 97th overall out of 156 clubs, which is a great result for the club.
Special mention has to be made of our number 1 supporter, Morgan Farley. Even though she had only one race Morgan was at every session cheering the team on and her screams of encouragement could be heard around the pool. Great work Morgan — you are a great ambassador for our club.
I would also like to acknowledge Head Coach Trent Patten. The swimmers were well prepared for the meet and performed great things under his guidance. I would also like to thank Rob van der Zant who stepped in to support the swimmers in the last few days in Trent's absence. The swimmers all enjoyed your advice and support.
All in all a very successful season, capped off with a great nationals campaign. Congratulations to all the swimmers, coaches and parents for your hard work and contribution.

Finally, don't forget Trophy Day this Sunday at 11 am in New Farm Park. See you there.

The Australian Junior Excellence Program (JX) gives goals and rewards swimmers for the effort they put into becoming a fit, efficient swimmer. Many swimmers who are part of JX go on to become a member of Swimming Queensland’s Zoggs Development Squads because their swimming skills improve and there are opportunities for them and their coach to be recognised and rewarded because of their achievements. Swimming Queensland is very proud of the opportunities it gives to young swimmers and of the success so many Queensland swimmers have achieved.

A Christmas greeting — 2010

The holiday season is upon us. The State Championships are done and the swimmers are taking a well-earned rest after a week of hard fought competition. The Coach is relaxed — we even saw a smile on Friday night! I would like to take this opportunity to wish each and every member a truly wonderful Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year. Thank you all for your support over the season. Have a relaxing and safe holiday season and I look forward to seeing you at our first Club night on 1 February, 2011.
Merry Christmas

A brilliant result for all swimmers. Special mention must be made of Kurt Hogan's swim in the preliminaries of the Boys 13 years 800m. Kurt was on track for a great PB but equipment failure caused him to lose time mid-race. He showed great courage and determination to swim on and still record a strong time. Well done Kurt.
Final’s night was an exciting event for the Farleys and the Youngs, with both Morgan and Sam reaching finals at the States for the first time. All our finalists did a great job. The results are: Boys 13 years 200 Breaststroke – Campbell Carsley won Silver with a 4 second PB; Boys 16 years 100 Free – Robert Eugster finished 9th; Boys 11-13 years 800 Free — Sam Young finished 6th with a 24 second PB; Girls 15 years 200 Backstroke — Morgan Farley finished 10th; and in the Boys 13 years 200 IM — Lachlan Neill won Silver with a 4 second PB and Campbell Carsley finished 8th.
At last tally Commercial was sitting 13th on the overall Club point score for the meet. That is a fantastic result for our Club — there are over 90 Clubs competing at the States.
The final day of competition starts early tomorrow. Commercial is again well represented with 13 swims. Good luck to all our swimmers!

Commercial receives ASCTA JX Award

ASCTA (Australian Swimming Coaches and Teachers Asssociation) has presented Commercial with an award to recognise and thank the coach and assistant coaches for their part in the Swimming Australia JX program, and placing Commercial in the top 30 per cent of Australian swimming clubs involved in this program.
It is critical for individuals, coaches, swimming clubs and the sport in general to have young swimmers achieving and feeling good about themselves and JX plays an important role in this.

From the President's desk • CLUB NIGHT UNDERWAY

Well, the season is finally underway! The weather smiled on us and we got our Club Night program off to a great start.
About 30 swimmers competed and all had a great night. A big thank you to everyone involved in the organisation and running of the event. As usual with any first event of the season there were a few glitches — but overall things went off OK.
The young swimmers were very excited about the Speed Awards — asking timekeepers for times, then rushing off to check the target times on the notice board. Certifciates will be handed out at next Club Night.
It was also good to see a bunch of new swimmers at the meet.
I have attached the Club Night Results. I have noticed a few discrepancies in the results. So, have a look at the results and, if you see anything that is not quite right, drop me a line at president@commercial-swimming.org.au
See you at the next Club Night on 9 November.
External meets
The swimming season is now in full swing, with our swimmers attending meets almost every weekend in the lead up to the State Championships — which are only 6 weeks away! I thought it was timely to remind everyone about the meet nomination procedure. The External Meet Pprocedure is also included in the Club Handbook. The purpose is to make sure that the nomination process runs smoothly and there are no errors in swimmers nominations. The procedure refers to the Club Calendar. There are many more meets than this and many of our swimmers will attend these to get race experience and set qualifying times. The notification of these meets often comes out from the organizing club not long before the meet. The Committee will notify members as soon as we become aware of these meets.
You can also check the Swimming Queensland Events calendar. For those meets
Shaping the future
In my inaugural message I said all members would soon be asked to give their views on the future of the Club. Well, that time has come. The Committee really wants to hear what you value about the Club, what we do well and not so well, and, most importantly, how you would like to see the Club grow in the future.
The Committee has put together the Member Survey to download, complete and return. I ask that you set aside a little bit of time to complete the survey and share your thoughts with the Committee. The instructions for completing and lodging the survey are in the document.
I look forward to reading what you have to say about the Club and it's future.
Ross Young
President

President's Inaugural Message 2010

Hi! Last Monday at the AGM I was elected President of the Commercial Swimming Club.
The Club has a long and proud history and I am honoured to be elected as the Club’s President for the 2010/2011 year.
I would like to introduce myself and share my aspirations for the Club. Like many organisations, Commercial Swimming Club has enjoyed good times and not so good times. About five years ago the Club went through a tough period and has since been steadily rebuilding. Under Head Coach Trent Patten we are developing a strong, competitive swim team with junior, intermediate, senior and masters squads. Numbers have continued to grow and the hard work of the swimmers and coaches is being rewarded with success in the pool.
Commercial has for many years been a significant force in Australian swimming. We proudly talk of Australian champions who have swum for Commercial. Commercial has for many years been a significant force in Australian swimming. We proudly talk of Australian champions who have swum for Commercial. Last year, Swimming Australia changed its approach to elite swimming by appointing a small number of clubs to host elite squads. Unfortunately, Commercial was not chosen to participate as one of these centres, and Commercial’s elite swimmers have reluctantly changed clubs to take part in this restructuring.
And in change we see opportunity! The Club is in a strong financial position, has a significant and growing member base and a strong, competitive swim team at regional, state and national level. We are very optimistic for the future of our Club.
My goal during the next 12 months is to lay the foundations for the future that will enable Commercial to again become a significant force in Queensland and Australian swimming.
First and foremost I want to create an open and trusting environment where all members can contribute to, and share in, the success of the Club. In taking on the role of President I have set myself a number of goals that will guide my efforts in leading the Club:

  • Secure and maintain the coaching staff.
  • Provide a platform for a friendly environment that invites a strong collaboration between coaches, swimmers and parents.
  • With members, articulate a clear vision for the future of the Club and develop a Strategic Plan to describe how we will achieve that vision. (Shortly I will invite every member to contribute to the development of a strategic plan that will guide our activities for the next few years).
  • Recruit and retain our swimmers, significantly growing the number of swimmers training – and achieving competitive success.
  • Establish strong governance and provide stable management and infrastructure to support the growth and development of the Club. Build and maintain a strong financial base so we have the funds to invest in the future success of the Club.
  • Engage members and encourage active participation in the Club through improved communication.

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the efforts and contribution of the Immediate Past President Peter Crane and his Committee. It is through their commitment, hard work and accomplishments that it is now possible for me and the new Committee to build on the agenda for the future of our Club. I would also like to introduce the new Committee for 2010. I very much look forward to working with them over the next 12 months. I know that we all share a common goal in accepting our roles on the Committee – to make Commercial a great Club for our swimmers and members.

The Management Committee elected at the AGM is:
President: Ross Young
Vice President: Simon Neill
Secretary: Peter Evans
Treasurer: Steve Casey
Other positions appointed at the AGM are:
Registrar: David Liddy
Race Secretary: Louise Hogan
SQ Rep: Peter Crane
BSA Rep: Steve Carsley and Ross Young
Assistant Secretary: Shannon Neill
I am also excited to announce the Club Captains for 2010, nominated at the AGM, are:
Male Captain: Luke Vacca
Female Captain: Charlotte Casey
Congratulations!

Again, thank you for electing me as your President. If you want to contact me you can email at president@commercial-swimming.org.au or call me on 0418 219 549. Or catch me at the pool - I am poolside reasonably often during squad training, so introduce yourself and share your thoughts on the Club.
Finally … the EKKA Café. The EKKA is only 2 WEEKS away! If you haven’t already done so, please go on-line and put your name down on the roster. This is our ONLY fundraising event for the year. Without these funds the Club will not be able to provide the level of support to our swimmers that they require. This important event is for your kids – so “please” help out. I look forward to your continued support of the Club over the coming year.

Cheers,
Ross Young
President,
Commercial Swimming Club Inc.

Well done Morgan, Brooke, Robert, Ben and Luke at the Australian Short Course

Luke Vacca and Robert Eugster got of to a solid start with both achieving PBs for the 100m Fly. Ben O'Connor was just shy of a PB in the 100m Breaststroke. Luke capped off a successful meet with a PB in the 50m Fly. He will have a well-earned break before knuckling down in preparation for the Qld Short Course Championships at the end of August. The second last day of the meet saw Brooke Krause and Morgan Farley swimm PBs in the 100m Fly and 50m Back respectively. Ben also swam the 50m Breaststroke, again just outside of a PB.

Good Luck to Morgan Farley, Brooke Krause,
Robert Eugster, Ben O'Connor and Luke Vacca
at the upcoming Australian Short Course

Brooke, Morgan, Robert, Ben and Luke were each presented CSC towels and caps with their names for achieving their qualifying times and to wish them good luck at the Australian Short Course Championships. All the best for your swims!

Claudia, Tom and Lachlan make waves at Fairymead Short Course

Three of our members made the track up to Bundaberg to compete in the annual Fairymead Short Course meet.
Swimmer of the meet has to go to one of our youngest team members, Tom Neill, who broke 6 meet records, which also gave him 6 PBs including the 100IM where he broke the record by nearly 8 seconds and the 50m Free at 34.80 lowering the old mark by 1.7 seconds. It was Tom's first competition as an 8 year old.
Tom's sister, Claudia, competed in 6 events in a strong age group for 2 bronze medals in the 50m Breast and 100IM, plus recording 2 PBs.
Lachlan Neill, unable to compete for the most of the meet due to illness made a gallant effort to compete in the last two events and received a gold and silver medal for the 100m Free and 50m Free respectively for his troubles.
All in all, a successful weekend for our Commercial swimmers. Well done!
